Esteemed movie director and cinematographer, Mikael Salomon, honored DACC SoCal business members with a talk about his life and career. Born in Denmark, Mikael knew early that film photography and moviemaking was his calling. The accompanying picture shows a 20-year old Mikael in 1966 on a roof top in one of his first cinematographer roles in Denmark. It was fascinating for us in the audience to know that Mikael was behind the camera on many of the movies we have experienced in our childhood growing up in Denmark. Mikael’s photography skills caught the eye of Hollywood and he was sought out separately by legends like James Cameron, Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard. With James Cameron, he made The Abyss (1989) for which he earned a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. In 1992, Mikael left the camera and turned to directing where he has stayed busy since. Our business members were treated to a personal and inspiring story about the craft and the business of moviemaking. Interviewed by DACC Vice President, Søren Eilertsen, Mikael and his wife, Nancy, zoomed in from their home in Beverly Hills. DACC President, Michael Rasmussen, introduced the event and Peter Work of Ampelos Vineyards provided background on the 2015 Pinot Noir that we all enjoyed during the early evening event.
